AB OBJECTIVE: Provide treatment and care to outdoor patients and families
as part of a basic cultural approach of aids epidemic in African
populations. Support community response to PWA and prevention needs.
METHODS: Through the first outpatient treatment center program of an
internationally based NGO (OPALS in Paris and Brazzaville) also focused
on training, information and treatments, creation of external
intervention networks in African cities (Brazzaville, Abidjan, Yaounde).
These networks encompasses visits and services at home which prolongs
the service of the outpatient center (laboratory, consultation,
re-nutrition, pharmacy, screening and counseling center), associates
traditional therapies and religions personnel, NGO's volunteers and
allows the developpement of communication between the medical caregivers
and the social personnel in order to provide comprehensive care outside
hospital. RESULTS: In associating the family ad the relatives though a
global approach of aid's patients, insure a better care, avoid
discriminations (ex: food allowances) and support prevention in the
community. The program is also part of an effort to provide information
and care in order to avoid withdrawal of infected persons from their
basic community.
